Gastro Obscura: The Quiet Rescue of America’s Forgotten Fruit

Melanie Wong | May 21, 201811:50 AM     3

As we kick off stone fruit harvest season in Northern California, this morning I was fascinated to read about C. Todd Kennedy, one of the state’s premier fruit experts, collectors, and growers and the work he has done to save rare varieties.

" . . . In 2010, horticulturist Clay Weeks estimated that half of the national collection of old stone fruit cultivars come from Kennedy. When asked, Kennedy makes only a slight correction. 'Half of the named varieties in the national collection come from me,' he says. . . "

And here's a link to his commercial fruit tree nursery in Morgan Hill, Calif., https://www.arboreumco.com/

Almost makes me feel like planting a home orchard.

One man is responsible for roughly half of the country's stone fruit collection.
