Gargiulo's in Coney Island Update

Four of us went tonight and agreed that it was one of the worst meals any of us had had in a long time. Service was fine but the food is just awful, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! For half the price we would have had a much better meal at my local red sauce Italian.

I had a half order of spaghetti carbonara - somewhat bland and sticky. Our friends shared a half order of gnocchi in tomato sauce. They described the gnocchi as heavy and gummy and to their chagrin, the tomato sauce had bits of meat in it. My husband had a mixed salad which consisted of iceberg lettuce, pale watery tomatoes, a handful of overcooked green beans and some julienned carrots in an oil and vinegar dressing.

For main courses, my friend had Veal Marsala which was nothing more than sauteed veal floating in brown sauce. Her husband had sausage and peppers - 3 enormous sausages smothered in peppers and half a gallon of sauce that looked and tasted like tomato paste. My husband had a lobster and pasta special that was comprised of a few chunks of lobster swimming in that same thick, bland tomato sauce. My Veal Francese turned out to be chicken in a brown sauce, tasting of neither lemon nor white wine, though there was a slice of lemon on top of each cutlet. The best that can be said is that the portions were enormous, but none of us felt compelled to take our leftovers home. It wasn't worth anyone's effort!

All told, this less than gustatory meal set us back $160, which included one drink per person. I hate to say it be we felt we probably would have had a better meal at the dreaded Olive Garden.

We'd actually all heard favorable reviews of the restaurant and were so disappointed that the food was just so mediocre/borderline lousy. So even as red sauce joints go, this one should have been gone a long time ago...!
