Not only is this place not closed it seems to be thriving with locals.
This place exceeded my expections in that I was expecting a Don Pepes Newark type place.
However, my husband and I walked from Fleetwood and sat at the bar. (And were immediately transported to an ambiance similar to Madrid in that there were old people, young kids and all ages hanging out).
Glass cases of food, a formica type bar, sangria, etc. (They tried to seat us in the dining room, but as it was lunch hour, we preferred the bar....However, the waiter insisted in showing off, not only the dining room , but a further back room that can accomodate private parties....musta been a speakeasy in the 20's).
We ordered the Chorizo (flamed in earthenware grill type thing); deep fried sardines (with head) and shrimp (with head). All too much food with side orders of rice and frites.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR RESTAURANTS WITH HEAD-ON SHRIMP!!!! They laughed when I made sure it came with the head and they weren't going to cut it off for us Gringos.
Anyway, all was delicious. The best part was the ambiance. I am quite excited to have this place within a half hour walk. It appears that if you speak portuguese you can get things off menu (like THAT type of place).
It is right accross from the Mt. Vernon East (New Haven Line) train station. Parking does not look impossible.
