Fugetsu-do, the Japanese treats shop on 1st in Little Tokyo, does not make my favorite mochi with bean paste filling in the area. That honor goes to the specialty shop inside the huge Mitsuwa on Western in Torrance. (Though Fugetso-do's are very good.)

It does, however, make incredible... mochi dumplings? Just hunks of rainbow gelatinous rice dough, about the size of one's thumb, with no filling.

Very satisfying subtle sweet flavor, nice chewiness.

They look boring (no filling?!?! screw that!), and I would have never gotten them, but once I was counting out all this small change in my pocket to buy some stuff and the owner must have thought I was really poor or something because she leaned over to where her colleague was packaging the little rainbow thumb-things and picked up a handful and wrapped it in Saran wrap and gave them to me, smiling.

I walked down the street, popping the things like pacman power pellets. They made me feel like a hero.
