Frosting without Butter?

Hello =] I'm very terrible at baking, so excuse me for my lack of baking knowledge.

I want to decorate some cupcakes and I want to try making my own frosting without butter (or shortening). I found some recipes online but the reviews are really bad.
I'm planning to decorate the cupcakes by putting it in those pastry plastic bags and using those metal tips that gives you cute designs. I'm worried that the recipes I found won't be good for that. They seem to be just for spreading it on a cupcake or cake, and some seem to be not good at all (too liquidy).

Here are the recipes:

Some of the reviews (especially the last one), says you 'need' butter.

Do I absolutely need butter or a butter substitute? Is there no butter-less frosting recipe I can use for what I want to do with it?

Edit: The reason I don't want to use butter is because butter is expensive where I live (South Korea). It's about $8.50CAD for 450g. And it tastes kind of weird so there may be some fillers in there.

Can I substitute any butter recipes with stick margarine? But I am unsure if it's over 80%. Margarine is only $1 CAD for 450g.

My budget is limited because I work with kids and some of them wanted to do a baking class and baking supplies are so expensive in Korea.
I want the kids to help make the frosting and then decorate some cupcakes.

I'm planning to replace vanilla extract with chocolate and strawberry syrup for the colors and taste.
