Fried Ipswich Clams at Sid's a big dissapointment

I followed an old thread promising real fried Ipswich clams at Sid's Seafood House in Canoga Park. Sure enough they did have them on the menu, and sure enough they were real Ipswich clams with bellies and I'd recommend them only if you're really desperate for fried clams. They were whole clams and the flavor did come through, but they were encased in such a sraight jacket of heavy batter that you had to really work at it . The batter was so heavy that the clams looked more like little clam fritters rather than fried clams with clearly differentiated necks and bellies. They were also pretty rubbery. All in all they were the worst fried Ipswich clams I've ever encountered.

The clam chowder wasn't too bad. It had been thickened with flour, which as far as I'm concerned disqualifies it right away. However, there wasn't a lot of flour and there were a lot of clams. There were far too many potatoes and the chowder sort of came off as potato chowder with clams.
