I'm a New Yorker-this means I hate the Boston Red Sox (I love new england's a healthy hatred don't you think?). Every now and again, I find I have to leave the confines of metropolitan New York and drive up to Connecticut to seek out fried clams. "But you have fried clams in NY," you say. Aha! Au Contraire!!! We have typical fried "strip" clams here in NY. What we never see, however, are those delectable morsels made from the clams that are affectionately known as "piss clams" or "steamers." For some reason, south of new england they just haven't adopted the art. They call 'em "CLAM BELLIES" because the whole clam (complete with belly) is used to fry up the absolute best fried clams anywhere on earth!!! Once you try these, I guarantee you that the very idea of a fried strip...reminiscent of the old Howard Johnson's approach to fried clams (I call 'em deep fried pencil erasers) will leave you cold. Try these babies in a good seafood place in New England and you'll never strip again!!! careful, though...there's an outside chance you COULD become a Red Sox fan. But, naaaaaaaah. Go Yankees!!!! But Go to New England for fried clams! Does anyone know a restaurant in metro New York where I can get belly clams? I'd love to save the driving and the expense of the ride to Connecticut.
