fresh turmeric?

Does anybody have experience cooking with fresh turmeric? I saw that they had it at the supermarket today so I just had to buy some. I love Indian food so I have plenty of experience with dried, powdered turmeric but I've never used the fresh rhizomes. Anybody have any tips on how best to substitute the fresh stuff for the dry stuff? Do you find that there's a big difference? Also, can you freeze it?
