Fresh Start Cafe: Good Food and Good Hospitality

Indy 67 | Dec 5, 201409:23 AM

We've been eating at Fresh Start Café for a couple of years and have always had excellent meals. The food is fresh, well-prepared, with little touches that elevate each dish. (Recent faves have included grilled shrimp and Greek salad in a pita or world class beet borscht). The last time we ate lunch I was struck by several little dramas playing themselves out around us that made me realize the restaurant's strong commitment to extra attentiveness.

When two mothers arrived with three children between them, the waiter placed a plastic table sized for children, along with chairs to fit, next to the mothers' table. No dangling feet for these young diners. We've all seen waiters taking photographs of patrons, but I saw Fresh Start response to a request for a plastic bag for a camera with a choice of a grocery-store bag and a zip top sandwich bag. (The diner chose the zip top bag.) Dogs are allowed on the outside patio of the restaurant and there's a water dish for them when their owners are eating outside. Finally, there's an oversized container of dog treats available, too.

There's actually news on the food front, too. Fresh Start is offering dinners Thursday through Sunday through the high season. ($25 per person) Typically, the restaurant has only served breakfast and lunch and closes at 3:00 PM. Now, on dinner nights, the restaurant re-opens at 6:00 and closes at 9:00. There's a menu posted on their web site that changes weekly. At least the one that's showing now is different from the one I saw last week. Here's the link to the current menu: http://www.freshstartcafesrq.com/seas...
