I’m taking a younger couple to lunch today. They are sort of new age-y but in a nice way. They exercise, do yoga and watch what they eat. When I asked just now what type of restaurant they want to go to the woman, who is a new arrival to our area, asked “is there someplace that serves fresh food”? I said, tongue in cheek, I think most do except for maybe the frozen French fries. “Fresh” is an annoying culinary buzz word that’s ubiquitous in food/restaurant marketing and definitely is used to influence young people. When asked what does she mean by “fresh” she replied, “you know, maybe with their own garden”. It’s early June in CT and unless you have a greenhouse, not much produce is ready yet, maybe some lettuce. I think she meant “organic” or “local” or a nebulous combination of the three. We’re going to a sit down place probably with a white tablecloth and wine service so most everything is going to be fresh, fresh produce, fresh meat & fish, freshly baked breads. I think we need a new name for this type of restaurant.How about "Frocal"? Am I right or just a stodgy (un-fresh) old man?
