Freeport area w/ Chowpup- I have half a clue...

dude | Jul 11, 2003 11:34 AM

My wife and I are taking the semi-annual trip to Maine in a couple of weeks. The last few trips have involved camping in Boothbay/Boothbay Harbor, punctuated with a shopping expedition in Freeport.

This time, we've a toddler, and are getting a room in Freeport for a couple of nights. We'll be cruising the area a little, possibly to Portland for a Seadogs game if timing is good, and may go as far as Kennebunkport on a day trip.

I have half a clue, but need more info:
I'm definitely dragging them up to Wiscasset to Red's at some point.
I like the (tourist trap, I know) place on Route 1 in between the first Freeport exit off 95 and downtown that sits between 1 and 95. I can't remember the name but it's like a few shacks/trailers arranged around a parking lot and we've enjoyed a crab roll with their good fries.

Would like a good spot for breakfast. We're staying at Holiday Inn.

I need a lobster wharf/shack, a la Shaw's or some of the places in the center of Boothbay Harbor, reasonably close by.

Need another good possible lunch/dinner place within a town or two away, not necessarily seafood oriented, that is good and toddler-friendly.

Caveat: we're trying to avoid most ethnic food (though I've picked up on decent Thai and few others by perusing the board). We're from NYC area and eat that all the time.

Slightly unrelated question: What is it with coleslaw in Maine? Everywhere I've been, excepting some of the real traps in Kittery, has AWESOME cole slaw, usually home-made by my estimation. I'm generally not a fan but cannot get enough up there...

Sorry for rambling. TIA for all help.
