Finally had an opportunity to try this much touted Szechuan Chinese restaurant, and it was delicious! 3 of us shared: chengdu beef (a huge bowl of tender beef in a chile sauce/stew with chinese cabbage, celery and broccoli, topped with ground chile pepper - seriously hot but so good) for $9.50; seafood chow foon (ok - fake crab, scallops and shrimp; good if you like wide rice noodles) for $8.50; shrimp pan fried noodles (excellent sauce with shrimp and vegees atop deep-fried noodles); baby bok choy and shiitake mushrooms (a simple vegee dish to counteract the strong flavors of the other dishes), and last but not least, the salt and pepper shrimp (crispy salt and pepper fried skin-on shrimp on top of a sweet vinegary shredded cabbage slaw) for $10.50.
This place is nothing to look at - very cafeteria-esque, and we were 3 out of maybe 10 people (including takeout customers) there on a saturday nite. what a shame. Just spreading the word that formosa is worth a visit/re-visit. on s. eads street in crystal city, just past 23rd.
