I just wanted to let everyone know that the new sitcom Brooklyn 9-9 is actually pretty funny and off to a strong start on Fox on Tuesday nights. One of the detectives on the show is a foodie, obsessed with finding the best restaurants in New York and letting his colleagues know about them.
His name is Charles Boyle, played by Joe LoTruglio, and while he isn't the smartest or toughest detective in the 99th Precinct, he's a hard worker and team player who has used his love and knowledge of food to solve more than one case.
While the Boyle character could have been a one-dimensional pathetic figure (idolizing his younger, cooler partner, played by Andy Samberg, and mooning over his sexy, tough, intimidating female colleague, played by Stephanie Beatriz), he is shown to be a stand-up guy and a competent detective over and over again.
Being a foodie gives him the extra characterization that makes Brooklyn 9-9 feel like a special show, and when we see Boyle save his colleagues' ruined Thanksgiving dinner with a multi-ethnic feast, conclusively ending a heated argument over the best pie in the city, or realizing that their distant captain reads his pizza-related e-mail blasts, he feels like a guy any of us could know or even be.
