Fontina, The New Mozzarella?

I've noticed on TV shows, particularly Cooks Illustrated, that they are using shredded fontina where mozzarella used to go, like on top of casseroles etc. when browning. I've never cooked with fontina, only have eaten it on a cheese trays at parties. I wanted to try some last week but it was $15.00lb at my supermarket because it was sold in the "gourmet" cheese section and it wasn't Italian, it was Danish. Do you cook with fontina? What applications? Does anyone sell commodity Italian fontina cheese? My Costco didn't have it How about Trader Joe's or Whole Foods?
