Florence Cafe...Remember Midi in Dupont?

Andrea D | Jun 8, 2004 10:28 AM

I must say, it was a sad day when I tromped down to Midi Cafe in Dupont with a stack of papers in hand and a dire need for their French Press coffee. Much to my surprise, it was closed...
But the owner has opened Florence Cafe in the Pimmit Shopping Center and turned an otherwise depressing strip mall off Rt. 7 into a wonderful bright spot with delicious food. It is meditteranean food and they offer brunch items, which I will try out soon. I started with a gazpacho soup, different than most Spanish-style faire, it was blended and bit more thick. The owner told me there was a kick, but it wasn't too much. Next was bread with a medley of salads as an appetizer. Hummous, eggplant, carrot, etc. Each was so good, although I don't care too much for skin-on eggplant. There were a number of daily specials (including a baked sardine dish that he was excited about but i couldnt bring myself to try). I ordered the chicken bastilla which came with a generous side salad of mesclun greens and balsamic vinegrette. My co-diner ordered a lamb stew over couscous with grilled hunks of vegetables. Overall, great experience...the owner so eager to please and the dining room so cheerful. The food is fresh and tasty, and if i get my way, the French Press coffee will return.
PS- much better service than Midi, which was always a bit crazy.
