Okay, I promised not to talk about Overtures for a few week seriously I love that restaurant and so do others on the Board BUT at the Yonnys dinner a few folks thought that would make a fun and more elaborate DDC Dinner. So tonight after dinner there (the chocolate brownie was stupendous!) I approached the chef/owner Peter with the idea of hosting a DDC dinner. As many of you know he has a $20.02 price fixe option but he loses on every one of those and if he closed for just us, hed lose the a la carte and $49.00 price pixe customers.
So , after some discussion we came up with a possibility which I want to run by the group. Well have to up the price a bit but Peter feels he can do a 3-course dinner for us at $30.00 including tax and tip! Its BYOB! But it would have to be scheduled in advance so he would close the restaurant. He cares about the waitstaff so he feels it unfair to do it for less. This is NOT family style or buffet as recent dinners were. There will be small choice of items and Peter will accommodate Vegetarians.
Overtures is just off South Street on Passyunk Ave. in South Philadelphia.
The main dining room holds 35 at tables ranging from 2 to 6 persons. He has room for maybe 10 more in the front section but the problem is cooking for whole group at once which would mean we would max at 35.
I mentioned that traditionally we do Tuesdays and so he looked at the reservation book. He is proposing Tuesday, July 2nd (2 days before July 4th). (An alternate would be a Sunday evening in July as many folks are at the shore.).
So, Im floating the idea to get feedback. It would be at 6:30 pm parking is pretty easy in the neighborhood where I live and so do Matt and Lisa, though theyll be in Italy then. I would ask for payment in advance so Peter knows how many are confirmed. Ill be willing to coordinate it. The 6:30 time would allow people to come into town and still get home at reasonable hour.
Most of you have read about the restaurant on the board including Matt and Herbs reviews. And the new Zagats gave it a 25, putting it in the 5th highest category along with Monte Carlo Living Room, Dmitris and, yes, Taconellis Pizza! I wont go into details except to say that its a gorgeous room (though it will get loud if we all talk at once ).
So, heres the deal: If you are interested in a DDC dinner on Tuesday, July 2nd, at $30. complete, please email me off the Board at Stevenramm@aol.com. (If you cant make it then, but would prefer a Sunday Evening in July (13th or 20th), email me with that info.
WE will need a minimum of 25 people to do this and will have to cap at 35. Ill gather all the numbers by THIS SATURDAY (June 1) and report back on the vote. If it flies, I can confirm with Peter.
If it doesnt work, so be it, but I thought it was worth the effort to try a place that has been talked about on the Board.
