Met up with old friends at Taberna de Haro. A fino sherry and a plate of wonderful olives (including some achovy-stuffed ones, yum) while standing at the bar to start, dressed with superb EVOO, Spanish paprika, and shreds of sweet onion.
A parade of small plates followed: standouts were the garlicky chicken, jamon serrano, and butifarra (veal sausage). Also, a huge green salad with white asparagus, hard-boiled eggs, and good tomatoes, a sublimely extra-garlicky potato salad, and an off-the-menu paella done with vermicelli and cuttlefish. Washed it all down with a couple of bottles of an extraordinary Ribeira del Duero that was perhaps the one bottle of red I hadn't tried there yet (damn myself for not noting the label).
Sweet, oily Ximenez sherry, a simple but fine cheese plate, and short coffees to finish, followed by two hours of overheated political discussion. Pretty much a perfect evening out, fully worth exploding my low-carb diet for one night. (Weakly self-justified it all by not touching the bread.)
