Do you sometimes feel like you're being played by some other posters?

I know this is an anonymous website. But my feeling is that most posters are honest about themselves and what they are saying here. I've been posting for about 3 years. If you've read my posts with any regularity, you have probably figured out that I am male, married with kids. I'm a professional of some indeterminate type who lives in New York. I do a fair amount of traveling and enjoy eating out regularly. I also am an avid cook. But I'm careful not to share too much. After all its an anonymous site.

I can glean similar information for other posters.

But then someone comes along and shares way more about the back story than is typical. The story is often compelling. Too compelling. Inconsistencies begin to appear. The timeline becomes jumbled. Statements are made that would not fit the character of the supposed poster.

I begin to doubt the veracity of the poster. I begin to wonder if I'm being played for some sort of fool or whether this might be some sociology student's thesis being researched. The individual takes on a personality just to see how innocent participants on the web will respond.

I won't name false names as I only have a suspicion. But the suspicion is ringing alarm bells.
