I haven't had a cold in a couple of years. It started as a tickle and a drip. A day later, it's full-blown. And so am I. Not sick enough to justify staying home from work, but just bad enough to make life miserable. I came home with a raw throat and a middling appetite for soup. I ended up making Potage Bonne Femme- potato, leek and onion cooked with chicken stock and a generous splash of white wine, then roughly pureed with a hand blender and served with hot milk stirred in and a pinch of fresh dill. It was hot and thick enough to soothe my sore throat, and filling enough so that with some good bread, everyone was satisfied and happy. Now I'm losing my sense of taste and wondering what I will waste tasteless calories on tomorrow. What do other 'hounds eat (or not) when you've got a cold? Are there flavors that cut through the congestion?
