So I've been living here for about 5 months now and just now found my haven. It's called Gourmet Tamales. Take Ojai Ave. down past the arcade, it's in Fitzgerald plaze across the street from the newly renovated Chevron. It's in the far corner. It's a rinky dink little place with 3 tables. The menu only has tamales and chile rellenos on it, but to your right upon walking in is a whiteboard with specials. The first day I went here I got a fiery red sopa de pescado with hunks of spine from what seemed to be the local rockfish, an oily seabass. Very very flavorful, tortillas are handmade, the rice and beans are super tasty, everything here tastes like it's made with a really killer chicken stock. Since then I've been going back almost every day, their barbacoa rocks, so does their mole, asada was eh..., cheese and chile tamales are awesome, their salsas are awesome, the guacamole is made in a mortar and pestle, gorditas are great, there was really hot pork in peanut sauce one day that rocked. Overall I love this place, the girls who work here crack me up (the first day they were talking about me in spanish, to which I replied "Entiendo que ustedes dicen!") It's about as chowish as it gets, and better Mexican than a lot I've had in L.A.
Oh yeah, and I still love going to Farmer and the Cook, on Roblar. It's an all organic little cafe with produce, a salad bar, two soups daily, and a daily special. Always lots of Ojai kooks hanging out here, good for when you need the health food/kombucha kick.
