Favorite India Restaurant in Hayward

Arrived here with pal, Saddle Brook Bob, about 6:30. The place was full, only one table left, which we grabbed. Server brought ice water and a basket of those thin crispy griddle chips (what are they called?), and two sauces, mint, and something red, sweet, and hot. The mint sauce was full of garlic and cilantro flavors, and went nicely with our two appetizers. We got vegetable samosas and paneer pakoras. The samosa were large, hot, and fresh, stuffed with potatoes, peas, and onions in a mild tomato kind of sauce, just enough to moisten and bind. The pakoras were more Bob's favorite; the mozarella-like cheese would have been better if it was a little more melted inside the crisp chick-pea crust.

Unfortunately for this report, we both got the same entree, lamb tikka masala. These lamb chunks are marinaded in a sort of sweet & sour onion compote, and roasted in the tandoor, then dressed in a cream- or yogurt-based sauce. The lamb had a nice chewy texture; its interior was deep red, presumably from the marinade; its flavor reminded me of Persian pomegranate marinade. The golden sauce was fairly light in consistency, and complex with spices I didn't recognize. What I did pick out included tomato, garlic, and cumin, but the total flavor of the sauce was much more than that, and we sopped it up with the onion kulcha we had ordered, hot naan stuffed with sweet tasty onion.

Bob loves Indian food, I don't, but we both agreed this was the best in a long time, and worth many return visits. Too bad he lives in New Jersey.

Easy parking all around, by the way.
