Fat Angel Farm | Mentone - San Bernardino County

Melanie Wong | May 29, 201711:54 PM

A couple months ago I had a chance to visit Fat Angel Farm in San Bernardino County on my way out of Palm Springs. It's an old citrus and avocado grove owned and farmed by a Bay Area chowhound alum. While I had missed the last avocado of the season, the orange trees were heavy with fruit ready to be harvested and the air was fragrant with the scent of orange blossoms. I had a tour of the grove and then she squeezed a mix of just-picked grapefruit, navel orange, valencia orange and meyer lemon to make the freshest, most vibrant and complex glass of juice for me.

I returned to San Francisco with a bag of Fat Angel citrus and held a tasting for some friends. Fat Angel's Marsh and Duncan white grapefruits were sampled alongside a backyard grown Coachella pink grapefruit from Palm Springs. I was stunned that the Coachella grapefruit that I'd enjoyed every morning in the Springs would seem so watery and dilute in comparison. The white grapefruits had much stronger, piercing aroma and were sweeter. The seedless Marsh had an almost lemony taste. The seeded Duncan packed in even more concentrated flavor with excellent tart-sweet balance and not a hint of bitterness.

The Duncan grapefruits would make the ultimate greyhound cocktail. Fat Angel has been selling at local farmers markets on occasion. It's considering a once a week trip to downtown LA to deliver to wholesale customers. Let's hope the craft bartenders get wise to this.
