Today, I went to the Park Ridge Farmers Market. Not a great market, but you can find some good things, and it's close to home.
There is a guy there most weeks that has cheese from small Wisconsin dairies; a very nutty swiss, a mild brie, a good sharp white cheddar, a good amish style blue, etc. But today the Park Ridge inspectors shut him down. They require he meet the specs of someone selling milk, requiring the cheese be at least 41 degrees. Seems somewhat restrictive. Are they afraid the blue will mold? In his defense, the cheese is kept on a table top of frozen containers, and always seems fresh.
So....no cheese for me, but I did pick up some petite asparagus.
Are there other markets with good cheese vendors in the area? Maybe Evanston?
