Fairwell to The Gutter

Tom | Aug 31, 2003 06:08 PM

Bad news to residents of Highland Park and anyone who fell in love with the quirky cafe nestled inside Mr. T's Bowl -- The Gutter is gone. Sadly, Mr. T himself passed away a few weeks ago. Rumor has it his son took over and gave the owners of the Gutter a hard time about how much rent they were paying. Now they are gone, supposedly looking for a new location in Highland park to reopen the Gutter.

The good news is that a new cafe has opened in it's place, called Mr. T's cafe. While the Gutter will be sorely missed (especially the meatloaf), I am happy to report that the new cafe is excellent. I think right now they are only open for brunch 10-2 M-F. The small menu consists of egg dishes and pancakes. I had a scramble with brie cheese -- it was delicious, with fantastic bread, and even served on real plates (The Gutter's paper plates were charming, but...).

Happy to have the new place, but sad to see the Gutter go. Here's to hoping it will reopen somewhere soon.

On another subject -- does anyone know the story behind the abandoned cafe in Highland park called "The Famous Spot"? It looks really old fashioned-cool and I'm wondering if there are plans to have it reopen since all the old equipment is still inside.
