I went to dinner last night at Blair's (a restaurant I'm sure you chowhounds have already discussed but I can't seem to find the thread), and all I can say is THANK GOD we finally have a great little bistro in Silverlake. I was so disappointed with Edendale Grill...we all had such high hopes for it, so Blair's is a welcome surprise.
We sat at the bar since the place was booked (good sign) and received prompt and curteous service from the bartender. I ordered a glass of a cabsav blend, which came in a beautifully polished, thin-lipped wine glass. We started off with the tuna tartar appetizer (two good-sized mounds of tuna sandwiched between two, crisp wonton squares which sits on a pile of perfect cabbage slaw, with two avocado slices on the side) and the portebello mushroom with goat cheese (the goat cheese is inserted into a silver in the middle of small mushroom pieces) - both were excellent. For dinner, I had the short ribs, which were tender, moist and very flavorful (and fell right off the bone) which sat on top of a scoop of creamy polenta. My friend had the mushroom risotto, which was very good but a bit on the liquidy side. For dessert, we split a chocolate and almond tart which was divine (and came with a nice big dallop of fresh whipped cream on top which was a good contrast to the crunchiness of the tart). All in all, it was a nice, long dinner in a lovely setting with impeccable service.
The manager (I think?), who is a shaved-headed guy did a great job thanking people for coming in, making sure people were seated promptly, etc. At one point, there was a patron waiting by the bar to ask for change, and the manager asked "Are you waiting for change?" to which the patron said "Yes." The manager said "Go ahead back to your table, I'll bring the change over myself.." which I thought was very considerate. Even though the place was packed and there were people waiting outside, the staff kept their cool and everyone got primo service. And I even got a free drink out last night; I moved down a few chairs for another patron so her larger party could be accomodated, and the patron sent over a glass of wine to thank me - nice!
I will definitely be going back to Blair's on a regular basis.
