Just wanted to post about two very good local places out in Northen and Eastern Queens:
I College Point, in the Whitepoint shopping center (with the Rag Shop, Keilly Take-out) there is a fairly new bakery - Bariloche. It's owned by Argentine bakers and serves mainly Argentine and Italian goods, with some Columbian (which, apperently, the local Columbians have given them some flack over) thrown in for good measure. They have excellent cakes and cookies, wonderful turnovers and great breads. Even the fat-free muffins are good. Try the cheese filled bread, the milk bread, and the wonderful chocolate covered meringue cookies. Good place, very good people.
Also, I happened to stumble upon this gem on a "side street" in Bayside. It's called European Corner and is on the corner of Jordan St. and 32nd Ave. Never heard of Jordan? Me neither, but it's between Francis Lewis Blvd. and 201st. Anyway, it's a little corner store, just 3 monthes old that is part deli part grocer. The deli counter is stocked with wonderful products like German pork loin, many types of salamis, and even Head Cheese. Much of the meats and cheeses (a nice, varied selection) I've never even heard of. The rest of the place stocks all European goods - from German poodings, to soups from Macedonia, to swiss chocolates. All areas are covered with wonderful, hard to find items. The owners are great, too. They are a dad, sister and brother team of Transylvanian Hungarians (!!!) and the were very nice and helpful in all aspects.
These are two wonderful local establishments that are worth a look see. (All this after I got my new pair of glasses from my Russian eyeglass shop, next to the Eqyptian-owned deli with Polish girls working behind the counter - Whitepoint Optique and Dee's Deli, also in Whitepoint and also great people). Gotta love Queens.
