When I was little, my family bought Hydrox instead of Oreos in a limited attempt to keep kosher, back when there was lard in the Nabisco treats.
I was recently at a restaurant that advertises "no lard" in its mexican food, which got me to thinking.
I live in West L.A., with a vegetarian girlfriends and a lot of friends that are quasi-kosher. Any thoughts on (more generally, not for me specifically) the etiquette today of non-obvious meats (both home cooking and eating out).
The idea of lard in pie crusts comes most immediately to mind; at home, I would never want to have to warn people about the trayf in the pie.
