Finally, after long last, Ashenda's Abasha Restaurant has opened in Bloomington, Indiana! We had heard that it opened but could not find any information about the hours/location and kept driving down 4th street to see the sign anywhere.
The restaurant is located at 424 East Fourth Street (812.333.5522) in the La Dolce Vita restaurant. It is now half Italian/half Ethiopian restaurant in the same space. Apparently the restaurant opened in the 80's, but closed and now has opened in this space since the owner's wife is Ethiopian (I heard) as well as the head chef.
We are vegetarians and were pleased with the entrees that we were served. The only draw back was the injera was "different" in that it was thicker and stickier than we have ever had served before in other areas. The taste was also different but it did not detract from the meal. We had YEATKILT WOT (Vegetable stew) which is steamed vegetables of carrots and potatoes seasoned with assorted spices, YEMISIR KIK WOT (Split lentil stew)
which is split lentil in red pepper sauce, seasoned with assorted spices, and greens steamed and seasoned with garlic and green pepper (to the best of our memory). We also had a fitfit appetizer which was great! We were very pleased with the meal overall and could over look the injera due to the excellent combination of spices in the food.
The restaurant is open for dinner during the week from 5-9 and on weekends from 5-10 but not open Sundays.
