Epicerie Boulud

made it into Daniel Boulud's newly opened Epicerie Boulud today for a quick lunch. to the left upon entering, there's a small bar with room for six to eight people. Chef Boulud was behind the counter with a big smile, speaking with several patrons. there appeared to be several beer taps and a handful of wines chilling on ice.

i quickly found my way over to the charcuterie and cheese counters, each individually staffed with welcoming and knowledgable servers. the charcuterie looked absolutely delicious and prices seemed reasonable. the Pork Pate in Brioche called to me, but i passed it by. the cheese counter is well stocked with a variety of domestic and French selections, most of which i believe were priced above $25/lb.

moving on to the hot and cold deli station, you have the option between eight to ten different salads and as many sandwiches. i couldn't resist the Cuban - suckling pig on a baguette with gruyere, jambon, pickles and delicious mustard. at $10.50 + tax, the sandwich was either too small or too expensive, but the flavor was incredible. the pork oozed. nine bites and three napkins later, i knew i'd come back for it. - no question.

while i was waiting for the sandwich to be prepared, i looked over the pastry counter. it was stocked with what you'd expect to find at any good french bakery - tarts, croissants, madeleines, eclairs, and more. small macaroons were fairly priced at $2.00 each. the flavors seemed fairly basic, just as with the gelato. regardless, i'm anxious to try both. coffee is supplied by Fonte of Seattle, which i believe is served at most of Daniel's restaurants. i took home a beautifully packaged box of Raspberry and Passion Fruit pates, each only $0.90/pc.

if it weren't for the fact that they close at 8pm, i'd be there tonight for an eclair and an espresso. extended hours will start after memorial day, making it a great option for before and after the summer events at Lincoln Center.
