I tried the EPI double layer choc cake - not good enough

I finally made the double layer chocolate cake on EPI, since it's been recommended numerous times on this board. It was very...nice. Not dry, not bland, but not out-of-this world, either. I think one of the problems is that it's got more cocoa than chocolate (only 3oz.choc to 1-1/2C cocoa!). The intensity came more from the coffee than the chocolate. My flatmates demolished the ganache (simple cream and chocolate number), but were rather indifferent to the cake, which confirmed my own opinion.

I want to play around with a good chocolate cake recipe, adding things like fresh grated ginger, chili, cinnamon, orange zest, etc. but I first need to find a great base recipe; something moist, with a cakey crumb, and an intense flavour. Does anyone have any other recipe suggestions?
