Empire Court (Hilton Suites Markham) chinese dinner w/ pics

I had my parents in town for Chinese New Year and instead of fighting thru one of those more popular Chinese restos this time of year with their set menus and poor service, we decided to give Empire Court a try after one of our friends had highly recommended it (she also liked O'Mei, Yangs and Ambassador).

We made reservations but it really wasn't needed since only 1/4 of the place was busy at the time. Since it's located in the Hilton Suites hotel in Markham, the diners were predominately westerners. Luckily for us, it didn't affect the cooking methods as it remained authentically Chinese.

The standouts were their version of lamb hot pot, very delicate pieces of high quality lamb (perfectly cooked to slightly pink inside) in a fantastic broth with a side of fermented tofu dipping sauce. The egg yolk coated deep fried shrimp and asparagus was addictive too. Stir fried gai lan veggies were good and fresh. Other interesting dishes were the stuffed Scottish Clams that had a curry based filling and baked with a crispy topping, and the large minced shrimp balls deep fried w/ the crispy shreds (nice presentation).

Other dishes included a fish maw/conpoy/shredding duck soup, and a rice vermicelli w/ crab dish. The only dish I didn't like was the fatty pork belly slices, as the sauce was way too sweet.

I haven't seen any dinner reviews of this place on Chowhound before, but it's worth a try if you want to have a nice relaxing high-end Chinese meal without the hustle and bustle of some other Chinese restos in north GTA.
