El Tesoro - West Chicago

I've read several positive posts about El Tesoro in West Chicago (129 W. Roosevelt Rd.) but hadn't seen anything posted in a while. I finally gave it a try last night and was very impressed.

Apparently, on Wednesdays, all tacos are only $ 0.99 each. I was going to try their sopes and gorditas, but couldn't pass up a good deal. I got a taco de lomo (ribeye). While the ribeye was sliced very thin and was well done, it was very flavorful and had ample amounts of meat in it.

I also ordered a taco de cesina - bits of steak and grilled onions, jalapenos and cilantro were nestled in 2 corn tortillas. This was the best taco I ordered.

A taco de tarasco finished up my order - it was bits of chicken with the same onion, jalapeno and cilantro treatment. The jalapenos were thoroughly seeded and therefore, not very spicy.

I was supplied with a salsa verde. I prefer roasted tomatillo salsa and this seemed to be made of raw tomatillos. While it was tangy, it lacked spice or boldness. It was fine for dousing on my tacos, but I would not eat it with chips.

While I love the more unique items at Bybys (huitlacoche, tlacoyos (sp), etc.) and their salsa, I have never found their steak to be very flavorful. However, El Tesoro's carne asada was delicious.

I'm not sure what other daily specials they run, but 99 cent taco Wednesdays will definitely keep me coming back.
