On Steve's recommendation I had a delicious taste of Bolivian cooking at El Pike. I had the beef Saltenas, which they offer here every day (as well as chicken)
The saltenas is a football shaped pot pie without the pot. The slightly sweet pastry shell is a work of art, complete with a twisted braid edge, and is magically hard enough to retain the soupy filling and at the same time very soft on the inside resulting in a bit of texture with every bite.
The filling - beef or chicken - was almost of a stew consistency with peas, potatoes, onion, black olives, and a hard cooked egg in a well spiced medium pepper tomato sauce. A side of tomatillo salsa was nicely picante and good in small amounts right in with the filling.
The rest of the menu is quite interesting with several dishes that are served only after 5pm or on weekends.
The combinations are unusual in the variety in a single dish and unfortunately they had no carry-out menu. But, I remember this one fairly well....
Two beef steaks, pork, a sausage, tripe, rice/potatoes and two eggs fo $28! (single serving)
Half of the restaurant has tables for eating and a bar, the other half is professionally set for what must be a 6 piece band in front of a 20X50 parquet wood dance floor and mirrored walls. The menu describes the place as a "restaurant/diskotheque" and I can only guess that it rocks on nights and weekends.
Sounds like a good spot for an Evening Chow-outing!
