El Jarro has opened in the spot which was formerly Taqueria el Illegal, at 48th Avenue at 45th Street.
The menu is small, and there are specials every day: tamales, ceviches, and tacos usually. The food is all super fresh, and arrives quickly. I mention the speed only because anyone who dined at el Illegal will most likely recall the agonizing 30 minute wait for any food to hit the table.
We ordered a scallop ceviche, which was amazingly fresh and delicious. Also a burrito de nopales, which was nice but bland (black beans, rice, delicious fresh nopales) and enchiladas de pollo con mole poblano, again nice and home-made tasting but shockingly low on the heat. I first thought maybe they turned down the spice for us since we're not Mexican, but it'd be pretty impossible to unseason the mole, no? (I noticed the fish taco special after I'd ordered. Next time....)
No beer or liquor as of yet. Water flavored lightly with pineapple was on the house, as was the tres leches cake, which we'd declined ordering as we were too full (even though the portions were not huge).
They seemed like very nice folks, and it sure looks as if they could use some business.
