El Gallito Review

DanaB | Oct 15, 200506:00 PM

Hi All!

Just wanted to tell you about a great lunch I had today at El Gallito. You know you've seen it before--it's the little luncheonette located in the parking lot of the Silverlake Car Wash on Virgil, just south of where Beverly turns into Silverlake Blvd.

I've been getting my car washed there for years, and have always wondered about it. Today, I ventured inside. It's a homey little place, serving mostly Mexican food with a few American items (burgers, fries) thrown in for good measure. I ordered two tacos ($1.50 a piece), one carne asada and one carnitas. While I was waiting, they served me some very decent chips and a moderately hot and tasty salsa. I watched while they prepared a few other dishes -- everything made to order. The machaca comes with freshly sliced avocado on top, and looked great! It look to me like they specialize in Mexican breakfasts and egg dishes. The guy next to me got a very appetizing looking plate of huevos rancheros, with his choice of frijoles de la olla, bubbling away on the stove, over refried beans.

My tacos arrived, piping hot, and they were HUGE -- easily enough meat for 4 tacos. They came with a spicy pico de gallo salsa on top and a slice of freshly cut lime. The carne asada taco was great -- smokey, tender and chewy at the same time. I prefered the asada to the carnitas, but the carnitas was also good.

Anyhow, I'm glad I ventured inside. Knowing this place is there at the car wash will provide me with added incentive to keep my car clean!
