Someone about a month back posted a link to vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the city. One of my friends is vegan and we decided to start hitting all of these restaurants together once a month. Last Friday was our first veggie adventure and we went to El Faro on 31st street just east of Pulaski.
On the menu:
Guacamole- Didn't have enough jalapenos and just not enough kick to it.
Tofu and potato gordita- My friend had that and said it was very flavorful with spice and she very much enjoyed it.
Queso con rajas gordita- I had that and it was excellant. The gorditas were made fresh with the masa and the poblano peppers and cheese were very flavorful. A little bit of beans and tomatoes and lettuce were there but not too much as to not over power the flavor of the peppers, which were sweet and spicy!
Veggie rice- A stir fried rice with soy meat and all kinds of veggies almost tasted pan asian, but very good. served with wheat toast, kind of weird...would order it next time with corn tortillas.
Rice and beans- I always have to order this and the beans were fresh and made with lard...very flavorful.
Strawberry liquado- great taste and refreshingly light and coffee.
This place is set up almost like a cafeteria. They have daily guisados and serve breakfast too. Their chile rellenos looked awesome and I am excited to go back. They have a whole veggie section on their menu and many of the items can be made vegan as well. The best part is the whole meal cost $16, the most expensive thing was the veggie rice and that was a meal in iself. We had leftover and were satisfied with our order.
