started off the new year at Julian's. drunken mussels was an excellent start to our meal. standard "whimpy burger" i still contend is one of the best burgers in providence. mrs ww had a flatbread sandwich that she said was good but did not look too inviting to me. was not billed as an open faced sandwich and i would have been a bit irked to order what i thought would be a sandwich and essentially get served a salad on a piece of flat toasted lavash.
our frequent co-diners' favorite north prov pizza place (Catanzarro's) was closed on the day we met last week so we got Twin's instead. a big crowd necessitated both a large and a small pie and it was a bit of a revelation. though i've always thought their pizza was good, the SMALL pie was phenomenal. i've had other people tell me before that their smalls are better than the larges and assumed that would be irrelevant, but i'm a believer now. the crust was absolutely perfect.
finally got to try Den Den Cafe last night. perfect timing as we got right in (and a parking space in their lot) just before it filled up. semi-cafeteria style (they seat you and give you a menu, you go up to the counter to order and then they deliver your food to the table) but it seems to work good here. crowd looked to be 99% risd students. menu not overly long and food was really good. thought it was straight up korean but there were many japanese style dishes as well. wife's bibimbap was the standout dish at the table but i also gave their kimchi top marks. beer and wine prices not posted anywhere so beware an asahi draft is a steep $7.50. looking forward to going back.
