Eat 'N Joy -- Ate, Not Enjoyed

Beth the Bandita | Mar 29, 2006 06:14 PM

SO and I were adventurous the other night and decided to try Eat 'N Joy, a fairly new place near our abode (south of Los Feliz and Sunset on Vermont) that billed itself as a Chinese-Thai establishment. The place had originally attracted my attention because it was close to home, had a fun thing going on with the decor -- warm yellow and orange walls, and a decent selection of dishes on their take-out menu. Well, to sum it up succinctly, it was bad. We had potstickers (which were deep-fried and whose filling consisted of mostly a mealy and flavorless cabbage) and Vietnamese spring rolls (which were strangely warm and whose rice paper wrappers were originally overdoused and became gluey and stuck to everything, nothing funky about the filling -- lettuce, cellophane noodles, shrimp, except maybe the chicken -- just plain and uninteresting, and the sauce that came with it was some hoisin sauce wannabe). Then a Chicken Prik King arrived whose green beans were very undercooked and the chicken was all dark meat and it all came swimming in, what we swear had to be, a bottled teriyaki sauce. And I almost forgot the larb -- a warm gray defrosted ground beef log nightmare tossed with onions. They do do a mean plain white steamed rice though and luckily no unfortunate side effects were experienced. Be forewarned!
