Durian Shopping in Chinatown

So, i bought my first few durians at the fruit stand on the NW corner of Bowery/Hester, and they were splendid: nice bright yellow/white color inside, smelly only after being exposed to the air for a while, absolutely delicious when frozen and eaten like ice cream...

Last weekend i bought one at the stand on Mulberry and Bayard (or maybe Pell?) disappointed: there was a greyish hue over the yellow fruit, it was smelly even before cracking the durian open, fruit was smelly even while frozen, and it lacked that delicious banana-like taste of the previous ones...

As a relatively new durian enthusiast/addict, i'd like to know: was this last durian one that had gone bad/moldy (that grey color disturbs me), or was it merely a little riper than normal and totally within normally accepted standards?
