Dupont Circle area, woman dining alone

I'll be staying on Embassy Row/Dupont Circle on Tuesday night and want to be more adventurous than room service or a hotel dining room. Probably won't get in from the airport til about 8pm.

Are there any sushi bars or interesting, maybe ethnic restaurants with communal tables where I'd feel comfortable and won't be hit on if I strike up a conversation with fellow diners? I like all kinds of ethnic, preferably light foods (fish, salads, Mediterranean, East Asian, etc.) Also, how safe is it to walk alone in that area by myself at night?

Also, for dining with a companion the next night, any good suggestions for dinner in the same or nearby areas (Adams-Morgan, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown maybe)? Would like comfortable, quiet enough for conversation, and interesting food.

Thanks in advance.
