Dunes Grill; Theater Dist. Mediterranean Trend...

Zach Georgopoulos | Oct 7, 2004 10:20 PM

Stopped by Dunes Grill on Geary today -- quite good! Started with an eggplant concoction that I can't remember the name of (sorry). I've had this at other Middle Eastern/Mediterranean places and it's often been bitter -- this was not, but was rather somewhat sweet and extremely enjoyable with the fresh, house made bread. I can still taste the garlic... Followed that with the Kofte sandwich, served with fries. The fries were thick cut, freshly fried, and relatively crispy, but they needed salt. The kofte was excellent, with lots of onion and parsley flavor, sort of in small patties, served on more of the fine house made bread. This is a very good hole-in-the-wall sort of place, open late (till 11), on Geary right next to the Halal meat joint, up the hill a bit from ACT. Quality is on par with, say, A la Turka. They have some very good looking rotisserie chicken. I shall return...

Now, I actually wound up at Dunes by accident, though I've been meaning to try it anyhow, after it turned out that a place I noticed this morning on Geary, La Pita Loca, was not yet open for business (it's replacing a small Kosher place across the street from ACT). This looks promissing as well -- a sort of bizarre mixture of Mexican and Mediterranan, with Shawerma on the menu (visible through the window), as well as pita wrapped al Pastor! I'll report as soon as they open. Also, a block over, on O'Farrell, it looks like another Mediterranean place, called Santorini, is geting ready to open in a few days. I'm sensing a trend...
