As many visitors to New Zealand, we were in Dunedin for a short stay. On our first evening we had a great meal at the Custom House with a very special squid starter for one, and delicious prawn starter for my partner. Generally, main courses in NZ can verge on the mega portions so be careful about adding more than one bread per table or any vegetables to the mains. The puddings were great too with an interesting marshmallow treat. The wines list is good. As ever, a great local Pinot was to be had (but you have to be careful with these and you tend to get what you pay for). Service was second to none.
The next night our landlady from Glenfield House suggested Corstophine House as a posh venue where Prince Charles stays. It is a grand country house and private hotel. All looked great but when we sat down, we were waited on by a school leaver (nicely, but he was not a waiter); food was slow, over cooked, and lack lustre; the restaurant was very empty. It felt like the chef was on holiday and the maitre de had taken the night off. Hugely dissapointing. This was the most expensive meal of our four week trip and I suggest avoiding the place. Our land lady was very apologetic but I am always happy to try places with good reputations!
