Taking pix in the Hollywood Hills today, last one around Laurel Cyn and Mulholland, so I made a pit stop/early lunch break at Du-Par's on Ventura Blvd. Nice early-'60s decor, smells like a diner, so far so good. Sat at the counter, got coffee, that was very good. Ordered a patty melt and potato salad; the waitress asked "How would you like your patty cooked?" Wow, better and better.
But it sorta went downhill from there. The patty melt was about the same price as Pann's, also basically a cheeseburger with grilled onions on grilled rye, but half the size of Pann's half-pound monster (not ENTIRELY a bad thing!) and almost devoid of flavor. It and the potato salad were in competition for the title of Blandest Dish In The Universe: those grilled onions gave the prize to the dry, flat potato salad.
I'm not gonna give up on these guys yet; the food dates from a time when Inoffensive was considered a Good Thing by middle-class diner patrons, and it helps sometimes if you order accordingly. I'll try some breakfast items next time.
