on several suggestions, I hit up Din Tai Fung for dinner and didn't do the usual dumplings-only thing. Got house special steamed chicken noodle soup (tasted double-steamed to me?) and shrimp fried rice.
Chicken broth was clear, incredibly pure chicken. Total chicken. Satisfying, if you like chicken.
But the shrimp fried rice...
A long time ago, I posted on some perfect true fried rice I'd had at Tonkiang, in SF. This is the closest I've come to that - pure flavor of rice, intensified by frying, and the slightest, subtlest of sauces. Delicate enough to taste the shrimp in everything.
For two, a meal of juicy shrimp/pork dumplings, soup, and fried rice is a perfect simple harmony.
