Should dried black truffle have a strong scent?

dost | Dec 22, 201603:38 PM

I have enjoyed truffle butters (white and black) and truffle salt over the years, and decided to splurge on a container of dried truffle slices today: Puro Tartufo from Casina Rossa. All truffle items I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying had a strong, distinctive scent. When I opened this jar, it was underwhelming to say the least. There is only a very faint chocolatey scent to them, and when I crushed a small piece and nibbled, it did nothing to improve the scent (or flavor). The jar I purchased expires in Jan 2017 (it is now Dec. 22nd 2016). Has this jar lost its mojo due to age? It this the normal truffle scent and I've been misled in the past? Everything I know about truffles is related to that strong, sometimes polarizing scent. Any input is welcome and appreciated!
