Dr. Hogly Wogly's BBQ in Van Nuys - YUMM!

Went to lunch today at Dr. Hogly Wogly's BBQ in Van Nuys. The BBQ is a smokey delight. Ambience is red naughyde perfect (better to hose off the sauce), and the sides are worth saving room for. I had the beef brisket meal which comes with 8oz of brisket and 2 sides. I chose the coleslaw and the potato salad. The meal also comes with a roll (more like a 1/2 a loaf of bread). I believe it was in the $11-$13 range. The brisket was served sliced and bathed in a thin red sauce. The sauce was unusual as it was thin but not vinegary and had a flavor that's hard to define (coffee infused?) I didn't think about it at the time I ordered but 8oz is A LOT of meat so now my husband gets to try it too. The brisket has the proper red smoke ring and is tender, albeit a might stringy on some pieces. The coleslaw is crunchy and slightly sweet due to the addition of raisins. The potato salad was creamy and potatoey.

My lunch companion had the sliced beef sandwich which comes on that same 1/2 loaf of bread with a side for I think, $7.95. He chose coleslaw and pronounced it "the best he has had in a while".

We both took home doggy bags which is the only lowlight of the meal. They take a plastic bag and literally pick up the meat with their hand as if it were dog droppings and then do that reverse inside out pick-up motion. Too evocative of doggy doo for my taste. They then tie a knot in the plastic and voila, warm mushy substance in a plastic bag handed to you. Then to make matters worse, they didn't wrap up the coleslaw or the potato salad or the roll (which I never did try because I thought it would be filler food but it looked great).

In spite of the doggy bag incident I'd definitely go back. The smell in the parking lot is enough to drive you wild.
