DOYERS (formerly VIETNAM) report

i stopped in today for a quick lunch. i asked about the change and the answer was new owner, new signage, same staff/chefs and same menu.

i had what were really two apps, but hey its hot out there who can eat a big lunch anyway? i had shrimp papaya salad and skewer grilled la lot leaf beef.

the salad was fresh and fine, if a little too bland/sweet for my taste (i think the spicy thai versions are better). however, lots of very fresh split shrimp and mint.

i have a soft spot for the la lot leaf beef roll dish. this version was fine and smoky/funky overall, tho the hamburger-style beef was a bit bland. nothing a little hot sauce or dip did not cure. you can eat the la lot leaf beef rolls separately or roll them up super burrito style into rice paper rolls with iceberg lettuce, fresh mint, carrot and cucumber. all washed down w/ an icy '33' beer of course and water.

so fans of VIETNAM, it appears really nothing has changed but the name. same big menu, same half dozen specials, and as usual, it's a great place for lunch.
