Partner and I ate at Dovetail last night - uws. I've been wanting to try it - but frankly some of the posts on this board almost made me stay away. Since we were going to the opera - we wanted an early reservation so i figured it would not be too crowded. I was correct.
We both loved it. The entire staff walked that wonderful line between friendly and professional. I wanted the tasting menu but was concerned about getting to the Met on time and the waiter informed me they could make an entree out of the one tasting menu item i wanted that was not on the entree list. It felt wonderfully accommodating. It was codfish confit and it was delicious. My partner had the chicken entree (i always get a little annoyed and frankly self-righteous when he orders chicken in "nicer" restaurants - i mean why chicken??? - oh my god - it was sooooo good! i learned my lesson).
for appts we had their crabmeat ravioli - it was delicious though two ravioli instead of one would not have hurt - he had the cold cauliflower soup - both very good. The amuse's not very memorable - but always fun to receive.
the slight downer was the dessert - we split the rhubarb dessert - not so good. one too small a portion for ten dollars and also it came in this watery syrup - if they had mixed it with some crushed ice or something it just would have given more of a substance to it - felt like cool-aid and 1/2 a scoop of coconut ice cream.
but all in all enjoyed and will assuredly go back - one last thing - did check out the downstairs - an early poster talked about it - egads, would not pay to eat down there - but the upstairs was very nice.
