I stumbled on this on The Board Where Absolutely Everything About Chowhound is Complained About, aka Site Talk.
On the San Francisco board, they have a Dish of The Month. Dishes are nominated and voted on, someone volunteers to 'coordinate' the activity for a month, chooses one of the nominated dishes, and starts a thread to discuss. Anyone who wants to can nominate a dish and vote for as many as they like, anyone can then participate at their leisure in trying as many versions of the DOTM as they want and reporting on them.
It would be a way to share knowledge and explore new dishes (although as you can see from the nominating thread, the dishes don't have to require an adventurous palate). People could gather to sample the dishes if they like but there would be no need to coordinate a get together.
Here's the current nominating thread of SF with a link to the volunteer thread:
What do you think? I think it would be fun and maybe a way to stir a little more activity on this board. As we've seen recently, there are a lot of people who lurk here but seldom post; maybe some of them would come forward and start contributing.
Some of my first nominations would be Crawfish Etouffee -- I've been thinking about it for a couple of weeks. I haven't had any in a couple of years and I'm trying to decide if I just go to one of the places I already know or try someplace new.
I'd also nominate cold noodle dishes, as in Asian noodle salads. (This is not the nominating thread).
