For a limited time, Dorjee Momo is serving dinner inside Bullfrog Bagels on 7th St near Eastern Market. The culinary inspiration for the dishes offered are pan-Tibetan, not coming from any one place like Nepal or present-day Tibet, though the momos in question here are from the Amdo region in China which includes Qinghai, Gansu, and parts of Sichuan Province.
I had the lamb momos which are pan fried and doused liberally with oil and a spice blend somewhat familiar to fans of Sichuan cooking. They were small, expertly crafted, and beautiful. They are dome-shaped with ridges, just like the Capitol. The wrapper is thick and the spices dominate, but still these are enjoyable. The juicy interior is very satisfying. They are not like the momos I had when visiting the region, so don't think these are typical. All the dishes seem unique based on the menu description.
The other dish I had was not successful, king mushrooms in a smokey orange sauce. The sauce was as advertised, but the slabs of mushroom were particularly rubbery, so I suggest passing on this to try something else.
